Just a few events that happened in 1994 to give you some perspective on how long ago it really was. Cuz when I hear a song today from 1994 it doesn’t feel that old.

I was excited when I learned about The Rub’s ‘History of Hip-Hop’ mixes because although I always knew when the good years were, I never knew exactly what was released when. These mixes chronologize all the best songs by year. Each mix (one for every year) is usually around 2 hours long. There is no better way to tell the story of rap music than by letting it speak for itself.

After listening to each year/mix I concluded 1994 was the best year for rap…musically, that is. ’93 was close, though. I think the biggest jump in modernity happened between ’92 and ’93. But 1994 still takes the cake.

In ’94, emcees weren’t bigger than the music. They were catching up to the newer procuction just in time to meet it at the crossroads. Beats weren’t overproduced and rappers weren’t ego-maniacs. Rappers and beats matched in some weird way that I can’t describing. I dont know if it was just coincidence or what, but shit just went together that year. You already know.
